What is induction hardening and why is it so important in modern industry?

Induction hardening is an advanced heat treatment process used to enhance the mechanical properties of steel and other ferrous materials by increasing surface hardness, wear resistance, and component durability.

Main stages of the induction hardening process

1. Component Positioning and Preparation

The workpiece is accurately positioned relative to the inductor, which is specifically designed for the component geometry and the area to be hardened.

2. Austenitization

The energy generated by the inductor rapidly heats the surface to the austenitizing temperature, transforming the material’s microstructure.

3. Quenching

Once the required temperature is reached, the component is rapidly cooled using integrated quenching systems. This promotes the formation of martensite, the microstructural constituent responsible for high surface hardness.

4. Tempering (when required)

To improve toughness and dimensional stability, the component may undergo tempering, which is often performed using induction technology as well.
