Hardening is the metallurgical process used to increase the hardness and the mechanical strength of steel. The workpieces are heated above the austenitization temperature and then cooled quickly (quenched) using a cooling medium (water, oil, air, polymeric solutions,…).
The cooling phase is an integral part of heat treatment and must be controlled as precisely as the heating phases. Due to its importance, the quenching (or cooling) portion of the hardening equipment deserves careful consideration.
