Self tempering

Induction self-tempering is an efficient metallurgical process where the material is hardened and then tempered using its own internal heat, rather than being moved to a separate tempering oven.
The quench is stopped before the core of the part is cold. The residual heat trapped in the center of the part migrates outward toward the hardened surface. This heat “soaks” back into the surface, reducing internal stresses and increasing toughness without sacrificing too much hardness.

Crankshaft self tempering

Tempering is a process that must be performed quickly after hardening to reduce internal mechanical stresses and prevent the formation of cracks.

We present here a machine designed for the hardening and self-tempering of a crankshaft. This method utilizes the residual heat from the hardening stage to temper the pins immediately after they are treated. The cooling time of the hardening process is precisely calibrated to ensure a complete martensitic transformation while retaining enough residual heat to perform a compliant tempering process.
